An American mother was killed by a shark on Tuesday during a snorkeling trip on the sidelines of a cruise in the Bahamas, according to authorities.
< p>The 58-year-old woman was attacked on Tuesday afternoon while snorkeling with her family in the translucent waters of Green Cay, off the capital Nassau, police said of the Bahamas in a press release.
“Organizers of the outing and members of her family tried to rescue her, but they were unsuccessful” and the victim suffered “significant injuries on the left side of her body”, added the police.
Once brought back to the ground, the rescuers found that she showed “no sign of life”, according to the police.< /p>
The family, originally from Pennsylvania, had arrived in the Bahamas on Tuesday morning on the ship “The Harmony of the Seas”, operated by Royal Caribbean.
The passenger was participating on an “independent excursion” – not having been organized by the cruise line – when she was attacked, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.
Confirming her death, Royal Caribbean has added “give support” to the relatives of the victim.
In 2019, a young American died after being attacked by three sharks during a family dive in the same area of the Bahamas.
