Another name for the Pyrénées-Orientales ?

#CONSULTATION – The name of the Pyrénées-Orientales department would not be to everyone's taste. For several years, the departmental council has wanted to bring about this name change, with the aim of asserting the Catalan identity of its inhabitants. During her greetings, President Hermeline Malherbe relaunched the initiative. It must also specify the modalities of a major consultation of citizens. Among the proposed names “Pyrenees-Mediterranean”, “Pyrénées-Catalanes” or even “Catalan Country”. The population will have to decide between the proposed names or the current one. A vote will be organized this fall, according to the president of the Department.

The Roman Days of Nîmes return in May 2024

#HISTORY – For three days, from May 3 to 5, 2024, the city of Nîmes will live to the rhythm of the Roman Days. Last year, the event attracted 102,000 visitors (32,000 just for the show at the arenas. This year, all eyes will once again be on the arenas and the new show, Germanicus and the Wrath barbarian which depicts the massacre by the Germanic tribes of legionnaires and civilians, a total of 25,000 dead! Also on the program: the legionnaires' fort, the Roman banquet concocted by a star chef, dramatized tours of the arenas, the parade evening by torchlight, without forgetting the historical conferences on Antiquity.

#MONTPELLIER – This is the number of hours lost in traffic jams over the past 172 hours , to be driven for motorists in Montpellier in 2023. This is the average calculated by the TomTom GPS application, which places the Hérault capital in 8th place among French cities (148th in the world) for the average time to travel 10 kilometers, or 17 minutes and 20 seconds. These lost hours represent an additional 150 euros spent on fuel.

Violence during a football match

#HERAULT –Insults, degradations, blows… Sunday January 14, at the end of the football match between Entente Sportive Pérols and US Béziers, at the Marius-Vitou stadium, serious incidents broke out. The police had to intervene. According to the Pérols club, "a large part of the players from Us Béziers" would have left the field by climbing the fences "to go and fight". It evokes "scenes of urban guerrilla", "kicks, punches&quot ;, against Perolian supporters and players. On the Béziers side, the coach explains "that following an incident in the game, 15 to 20 people in the stands went down towards the fence and attacked three supporters of our club. They elbowed each other, broke a pair of glasses… Our players saw this and jumped the fence to defend them". He denies the damage and death threats denounced by the Pérols club. The Occitanie Football League was contacted and complaints were filed.

A new census

#OCCITANIE – The 2024 population census in the region was officially launched this Tuesday, January 16. The census turns out to be exhaustive, every five, for municipalities with less than 10,000 inhabitants. And it takes place every year on a sample of 8% of housing for municipalities with more than 10,000 inhabitants. On this basis, during the calendar year 2024, 960 municipalities will be identified in Occitanie, including 35 municipalities with more than 10,000 inhabitants, and 306 municipalities with less than 10,000 inhabitants for the area of Montpellier (roughly, the former Languedoc-Roussillon). Which represents, according to INSEE, "268,000 homes surveyed, and 428,000 people surveyed".
