“Tremble. This is only the beginning”: shocked by Rima Hassan's comments, François-Xavier will file a complaint

Right-wing MEP François-Xavier Bellamy announced on Thursday, July 25, 2024, his intention to file a complaint against his LFI colleague Rima Hassan. He accuses her of having “named him for the vindictiveness of Islamist circles” on social media.

“The threat, towards any citizen or towards an elected official, cannot be tolerated in a democratic society”, Mr. Bellamy stated in a press release in which he announced that he had “decided to ask his lawyer, Mr. Thibault de Montbrial, to file a complaint”.

The right-wing MEP had blocked the election of the rebellious elected official to the vice-presidency of the Human Rights Commission this week. the man from the European Parliament, leading to a virulent reaction from his opponent on X (ex-Twitter).

“For the moment, François-Xavier Bellamy and his little buddies, close to the Israeli genocidal regime, are sleeping well at night. It won't last”, she wrote on Wednesday, the day after another tweet in which she warned him: “Tremble. This is just the beginning".

"Terms that are impossible not to understand as direct physical threats", declared Mr. Bellamy, who believes that he has thus been designated by the LFI MEP "by name to the vindictiveness of Islamist circles, whose violent actions she has, on several occasions, legitimized".

A figure of LFI and the law international

A Franco-Palestinian activist and lawyer, Rima Hassan was one of the main figures in LFI's campaign for the European elections on June 9, which Jean-Luc Mélenchon's party focused on the situation in Gaza.

Laurent Wauquiez, president of the Republican Right (LDR) group in the National Assembly, gave his support to his colleague on X, accusing Rima Hassan of “sticking a target on Mr. Bellamy's back to try to silence him”.

“This is why we are blocking LFI at “the National Assembly,” he added, the right having supported Yaël Braun-Pivet's candidacy for the presidency a week ago to block the New Popular Front.
