Pierre Lauraire, a cattle breeder in Chaudeyrac, accompanied by other farmers and members of the Rural Coordination, came to drop off the carcass of a young calf killed during the night from Saturday to Sunday. Another calf was killed last week on the same farm. The wolf is believed to be the cause of the deaths.
“I noticed the death of this calf on Sunday morning. It's the second in a week. Another one had been killed last year”,notes, dejected, Pierre Lauraire, cattle breeder in Chaudeyrac. The farmer, colleagues and representatives of the Rural Coordination (CR) came on Monday, September 30, 2024, to drop off the carcass of the animal in front of the building of the Departmental Directorate of Territory (DDT), in Mende, to demand urgent measures to protect Pierre Lauraire's livestock farm from predators.
An inextricable situation
State representatives came to note the irreparable situation, while warning: “Do not do anything outside the framework legal." The CR requested an immediate meeting with the prefect, so that urgent arrangements could be made. "I only have eight calves left", the breeder stressed.
A tense climate developed between union representatives and government officials, where each developed their arguments: "When a family plasters a panicked cow on the road, we will what ?" s’s an indignant breeder. "Many no longer report attacks. Nothing is happening! There are packs of wolves everywhere in the department. We must tackle the problem head on, argued another. We must eradicate the wolf or the profession will be eradicated."
The administration argues that it is waiting for precise directives from the top of the State and from Europe. But for immediate action against the wolf, suspected of being the cause of the death of the two calves, no response.
