UEFA is working on in order to reduce the number of teams at the stage of the group round of the Europa League with 48 to 32.
This was announced by the President of Juventus Andrea Agnelli, quoted by Football Italia.
“We are working on the introduction of the third tournament. It would be very good for clubs to have more chances to participate in European competitions. With UEFA we are also considering to reduce the number of teams in the Europa League – from 48 to 32. We want more balance in this fantastic sport because it is the most beautiful sport in the world,” he said.
“We have to think about what kind of football we want to leave for our children. In the 70-ies and 80-ies of the European Champions Cup won teams like Ajax and Benfica. It is difficult to see them on top through the huge economic disparities between them and the clubs from Spain, England and Germany. Football over the last 10 years has grown at an incredible rate. The most important factor is the profit from TV rights, but a third of the income from football accounted for 12 of the richest clubs,” said Agnelli.
Earlier it became known that Ukraine is preparing a bid to host UEFA super Cup in 2021.
Recall, UEFA has denied the idea of holding a Champions League final in new York.
