It is “very positive” that experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency were able to inspect the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine on Thursday, although it is “too early” to assess its conclusions, the Kremlin ruled on Friday.

“Overall, we find it very positive that the delegation has arrived and has started to work despite the difficulties and problems,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the press.

“It is too early to make an assessment (…) The team is still there, so it is still too early, but the most important thing is that the mission is there,” he added.

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, has been occupied since March by Russian forces in the south of Ukraine.

Its inspection on Thursday by an IAEA team, whose chief Rafael Grossi was present, was eagerly awaited, after weeks of bombardments which sparked fears of a nuclear disaster.

Russia, whose forces have occupied the plant since March, and Ukraine blame each other for the strikes.

Some members of the IAEA mission left the plant on Thursday evening but others remained behind.
