Russia launched a large-scale missile attack against Ukraine on Monday morning, January 8, 2024, hitting residential areas and industrial sites and injuring several people, Ukrainian authorities said.

"The enemy is brutally attacking peaceful towns,” said Oleksandr Vilkul, mayor of the southern Ukrainian town of Kryvyi Rih, on the Telegram messaging application. Full information on the extent of potential damage will be announced after the Russian attack ends, he added.

No comments from Moscow

The targets of the Russian attack and the scale of the strikes were not specified. Moscow had no immediate comment. Anatoly Kurtiev, secretary of the Zaporizhia city council, said on Telegram that a missile attack on the town in southeastern Ukraine had caused injuries, without giving further details.

Five explosions

According to regional governor Yuri Malachko, five explosions were heard in the city and at least two people were injured.
