Police in Hamburg, Germany, said Sunday they had shot and wounded a man who threatened to attack police officers with a pickaxe and a Molotov cocktail in the city ahead of a Euro 2020 match.

However, “there is no evidence that this is related to football" and the match scheduled for this afternoon in the Hanseatic city between the Netherlands and Poland, local police spokesman Thilo Marxsen told AFP. For reasons that are still unknown, "the attacker came out of a café and threatened police officers," he added.

The police eventually shot him and "by injuring him in the leg", the spokesman added, indicating that the attacker had been hospitalized. Hamburg is one of the cities where the Euro football matches are taking place.

The match between the Netherlands and Poland is scheduled for Sunday from 3 p.m. and a large police presence has been deployed. The attack took place near the very touristy Reeperbahn avenue, a little over a kilometer from the "Fan zone" set up by the authorities in a city park.
