Montpellier's Pierre Le Corre was caught up in a fall during the mixed relay of the triathlon at the Paris Olympics on Monday, August 5, destroying France's chances of a medal.
We tend to forget it, but bad luck can be a top athlete's worst enemy. French triathletes can see this after the mixed relay on Monday, August 5.
Among the favorites for the gold medal with an XXL relay (Pierre Le Corre, Emma Lombardi, Léo Bergère, Cassandre Beaugrand), the Blues suffered a racing incident that condemned them for the podium.
“I couldn't do anything”
In the first bike relay, Pierre Le Corre, the first Frenchman to set off on the starting line, was caught in a fall caused by the Olympic vice-champion in the individual, Hayden Wilde.

“Wilde falls in front of me and I can't avoid him. He is one of the most technical riders on the bike. He was hindered in his trajectory, had to correct. I couldn't do anything. I tried to get back up quickly but I derailed. Afterwards, once you are alone, it's hard to come back. “Thanks to the whole team who fought until the end”, explained the 34-year-old from Montpellier to France Télévisions.
The 30-second deficit was never caught up by the French team. Last at that time, it still finished 4th in the mixed relay thanks to a crazy finish by Cassandre Beaugrand.
