In the packed stands, and in front of an audience of big American names, Biles began the Paris Games with the balance beam, an apparatus for which she holds 4 world titles.

She delivered a very solid and impressive performance, to the very loud cheers of the audience and supported by American movie stars Tom Cruise, Jessica Chastain and Ariana Grande, but also Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, in a white dress with roses and sunglasses.

Gymnastics icon

As she entered the arena, the audience stood up to welcome her and Biles thanked the spectators by blowing them kisses and flashing a big smile.

The gymnastics icon has quite a journey over the course of a week that should make her even more history-making. With 37 medals, Olympic and World Championships combined, a record, she is looking for new trinkets and could add 6 new medals to her collection in total with the team competition (Tuesday), the individual all-around competition (Thursday), and the apparatus finals (Saturday 3, Sunday 4 and Monday 5 August).

“Twisties”

The four-time Olympic champion at the Rio Olympics in 2016 is making her return to the Olympic scene after having to abandon the Tokyo Games in 2021, due to depression. The 27-year-old gymnast explained that she suffered from "twisties", these losses of bearings in space that occur in an instant.

To preserve her mental health, she had preferred to withdraw from the competition after having nevertheless won the bronze on the beam, in addition to the silver medal in the team event. After a year's break, the American, who has been coached by a French couple since November 2017 in Spring (Texas), made a spectacular comeback at the 2023 World Championships in Antwerp (Belgium), where she won 5 medals, including 4 gold.

She also introduced a new vault movement into the scoring code, which is particularly technically difficult and now bears her name, the Biles II. In Paris, she plans to sign a 6th movement of her own, this time on the uneven bars, her 'weakest' apparatus. If it is validated, she will have created a figure on each of the four apparatuses (floor, vault, bars and beam).
