War in Ukraine: A battalion made up exclusively of Canadian fighters

Many Canadians have responded to fight with the International Legion for the Territorial Defense of Ukraine, so much so that a separate battalion has been created for them, the ” National Post”.

550 would-be fighters arrived in Kyiv from Canada, a Ukrainian government source confirmed to the media.

“The International Legion volunteers are usually kept together for logistical reasons, as it is easier for communication, to avoid language barriers,” the Legion representative explained.

Hundreds of other Canadians have also volunteered to help the Russian-invaded country, according to Borys Wrzesnewskyj, a Ukrainian-Canadian activist who helps recruit volunteers.

If Canadians can sign up directly to the official program of the Ukrainian government, Mr. Wrzesnewskyj assured that many pack their bags and go directly to Poland to reach Ukraine afterwards.

“What's so heartwarming is that there are so many ex-Canadians who come forward and understand that this is fundamentally wrong,” he told the National Post.

“They are also aware that this is not just the battle for freedom and democracy for 44 million Ukrainian citizens. Today, the people on the front lines in Ukraine […] are defending the North Atlantic democratic space,” he added.

Ukrainian diplomats intend to give priority to applications from Canadians with military experience, but would accept anyone wishing to join the front.
