A major attack on energy infrastructure in Ukraine
Russia launched a vast air attack on Saturday June 1, 2024 using missiles and drones against Ukrainian energy infrastructure, including installations in five different regions, according to Ukrainian authorities.
Ukrenergo, operator of Ukraine's power grid, said equipment was damaged in the regions of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, Zaporizhia and Dnipropetrovsk in the southeast, Kirovohrad in the center and from Ivano-Frankivsk in the west.
"This morning, the Russians launched a new attack on Ukrainian energy facilities. Since March, this is already the sixth massive, complex missile and drone attack against civilian energy infrastructure", Ukrenergo said.
Ukrainian air defenses shot down 35 of 53 Russian missiles and 46 of 47 drones, the air force command said Ukrainians. Volodimir Zelensky once again called on Western countries supporting Ukraine to provide it with more means to defend itself.
Zelensky in Singapore
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived at an international defense forum in Singapore on Saturday, where he is expected to once again call for strong Western support in the face of Russian advances on the ground.
Mr. Zelensky is scheduled to speak on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. (3 a.m. GMT) at the Shangri-La Dialogue, a forum that brings together officials from around the world and in particular the American, Chinese and French Ministers of Defense.
He arrived on Saturday at the luxury hotel hosting the forum, greeted the organizers before being taken to an elevator, journalists noted.
Seeking support in the face of Moscow's offensive, the Ukrainian president welcomed Friday "a step forward" after the green light given by the United States to the use by kyiv of weapons supplied by the Americans to strike, under conditions, targets on Russian soil.
Berlin in turn announced on Friday that it authorized Ukraine to use German weapons against military targets in Russia to defend itself.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on Tuesday against the use of Western weapons against Russian territory, citing "serious consequences& quot; and calling on European states to think about the issue.
