Ukraine claims to have shot down 89 drones launched during a major Russian attack

Ukraine's air force said Wednesday it shot down 89 drones and a missile launched by Russia overnight, in one of the largest drone attacks since the start of Russia's invasion war. The Russian attack mainly targeted the Kiev region, where local authorities said the air force shot down more than 40 drones. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, all Russian drones launched during the night have been shot down.

Ukraine says it has repelled one of Russia's largest drone attacks

The Ukrainian Air Force said Wednesday it had repelled one of the largest drone attacks by Russia since the start of its invasion war in Ukraine. It shot down 89 drones launched by Russia overnight on the capital Kiev, the surrounding region and other areas of the country. All Russian drones launched overnight were shot down, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. The Russian attack mainly targeted Kiev and its surrounding region, where local authorities said more than 40 drones were shot down. An air raid alert sounded for much of the night.

According to the military administration of the Ukrainian capital, no civilians or vital infrastructure were directly hit, but debris damaged the roofs, windows and facades of 13 residential buildings. “This is one of the most massive attacks carried out by Shahed-131/136 drones”, said the Air Force, referring to a type of drone regularly used by Russia for its strikes against Ukraine. The Russian attack carried out overnight is the seventh targeting the capital kyiv since the beginning of the month, said the head of the city's military administration, Serhiy Popko.

More than 11,000 Kiev residents took refuge in metro stations overnight as drones arrived in several waves from "all possible directions& quot;, city authorities said. The Ukrainian Air Force also intercepted a Kh-59 missile fired at the Mykolaiv region in southern Ukraine. Local authorities have so far reported no damage. Russia has made no comment on this attack.

Zelensky calls "half measures" sanctions targeting Russia at the 2024 Olympics

The Ukrainian president called "half measures" the sanctions imposed on Russia and Belarus at the Paris Olympic Games, denouncing the presence of Russian athletes under a neutral banner, when hundreds of Ukrainian athletes have died since the start of the invasion. "Every country in the world sees clearly that the athletes under the neutral banner are athletes from Russia and Belarus. I think that these sanctions are half measures", declared Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with several French media including AFP.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine with Belarus' support, the International Olympic Committee banned both countries from the 2024 Olympics. But a handful of Russian and Belarusian nationals who never supported the Russian assault are participating as individuals, under neutral banners and without an anthem, in the Games. “Thirty (Russians and Belarusians) are participating. And (Russia) killed 488 of our athletes and coaches during the war. They just killed them,” Zelensky insisted. He was also offended by the lack of sanctions against North Korea, accused of supplying huge quantities of shells to Russia, but also by the fact that the economic sanctions imposed by the West on Moscow are being circumvented.

“If we decide to impose sanctions, let's impose them, but if they are half-sanctions, then we might as well not do it. It's better not to be populist“, he said. Finally, he explained his absence from the opening ceremony in Paris by the “tense” situation on the Eastern front where the Russian army is advancing. “I would have liked to be there, if the situation in my country was not so difficult”, argued Mr. Zelensky, “the Russians are hitting us, they don't care that there are Games”.

Russia has been on the offensive for months against a Ukrainian army lacking men and weapons. It has nibbled away at hundreds of square kilometres of territory this year, but has failed to achieve a major breakthrough of Ukrainian lines.

Insufficient Western support enables Russian territorial gains, Zelensky says

The Western ban on Ukraine striking deep into Russian territory and the lack of material assistance are the cause of Russia's territorial gains in Ukraine in recent months, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused.

“It's a big challenge, the fact that we can't use (Western) weapons as we need to stop the enemy,”, he said in an interview with several French media outlets including AFP on Tuesday, before also lamenting the lack of aid: "Do you think it is possible to stop (the Russians) if only three (Ukrainian brigades) out of 14 are equipped ?"

The whole world wants Russia at the next peace summit, says Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured in an interview with several French media outlets, including AFP, that the “whole world”, including Ukraine, wanted Russia to participate in an upcoming peace summit.

“The majority of the world says today that Russia must be represented at the second summit, otherwise we will not achieve significant results. Since the whole world wants them at the table, we cannot be against“, he said.

Ukraine organized a summit for peace in Ukraine in Switzerland in June with some 90 countries, mainly allies. Russia had been excluded, and as a result China, a diplomatic heavyweight close to Moscow, had refused to participate.

Ukraine will now draw up a plan by November that should serve as the basis for a future second summit, while President Vladimir Putin has set as a condition for talks that Kiev give up the territories occupied by the Russian army and renounce joining NATO, demands that are unacceptable to Ukrainians and Westerners.

Moscow has said it is waiting for more details about this summit before deciding on possible participation, while asserting that the government in Kiev is not a legitimate interlocutor.

Mr. Zelensky also called on China to pressure its Russian ally to end the war that Russia has been wreaking havoc on its country for two and a half years, something Beijing, at least publicly, has not done so far.

“If China wants, it can force Russia to stop this war. China belongs to the world and is an influential state,”, he said. “I don't want her as a mediator, I want her to put pressure on Russia", hammered the Ukrainian president.

According to Westerners, Beijing, by supporting Russia economically, allows the Russian industrial machine to transform into a war economy by providing it with the components that Moscow lacked for its arms factories in the made Western sanctions.

Chinese authorities have also never condemned the invasion, while proclaiming their support for the territorial integrity of all countries in the world, which includes therefore Ukraine.

Finally, Mr. Zelensky once again criticized the timidity of his Western allies, accusing them of prohibiting him from freely using the weapons delivered to strike military targets on Russian territory, from where Moscow's army can operate with impunity to bomb Ukraine.

“It is a big challenge that we cannot use (Western) weapons as we need them to stop the enemy”, he said. Mr Zelensky says he is “working very hard” to convince his allies to let him use these weapons as the Ukrainian military sees fit.

“Unfortunately, our partners are still afraid of this”, he said, with the West saying it wanted to avoid provoking an escalation. Mr Zelensky ruled out overriding their veto, so as not to jeopardize future aid.

“If we use our partners' weapons (without their agreement), then they can say 'we won't give you anything anymore', it's a risk,” he explained. But he also lamented that the aid provided was insufficient.

“Do you think it is possible to stop (the Russians) if only three (additional Ukrainian brigades) out of 14 are equipped?”, the Ukrainian leader said, explaining why the Russian army has been able to nibble away at hundreds of square kilometers of Ukrainian territory since the beginning of the year.

The American presidential election represents a “challenge” and a “risk” for Ukraine, according to Zelensky

The Ukrainian president acknowledged that the uncertainty over the election of Kamala Harris or Donald Trump in the US presidential election posed a “risk” for Ukraine, which is counting on continued US military support to confront Russia.

“We cannot influence any election, but of course the United States is a challenge today. And there are risks that none of us can predict,” Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview Tuesday with several French media outlets, including AFP.

A key ally of Ukraine, the United States has provided tens of billions of dollars in military and economic aid to kyiv to confront the Russian invasion, all under the leadership of Democratic President Joe Biden, a policy that his vice president, Kamala Harris, is expected to continue if she is elected to the White House in November.

While the Republican camp has just as strongly supported Kiev in 2022 and part of 2023, a group of staunch supporters of Donald Trump has blocked aid to Ukraine for months in late 2023 and early 2024.

In kyiv and Europe, many are those who fear that this vital assistance could be jeopardized by Republican Donald Trump, who has repeatedly said without giving further details that he will force both sides to a negotiated solution. He also chose as his vice president J.D. Vance, a fierce opponent of support for Ukraine.

“As president of Ukraine, I have to have a dialogue between my team and that of (Joe) Biden, Trump and now Harris, we have to have these contacts to discuss what the future could be if one side or another wins the election”, the Ukrainian president summarized. However, Mr. Zelensky said he was certain that there will always be “a majority (…) regarding support for Ukraine”.

“This majority will weigh on the (American) Congress, because they are the representatives of the public, so I believe that we will keep a majority in Congress regarding support for Ukraine”, he said.
