Russia withdraws ships from Sea of Azov

A spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy said Russia has withdrawn its ships from the Sea of Azov in Crimea

“There are no ships left in the Sea of Azov”, Dmitro Pletentchouk said on Facebook. Ukrainian navy officials have said in recent months that attacks on Russian targets on the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Moscow in 2014, and other areas in the Black Sea had forced Russia to move its ships.

Tanks delivered soon

The 14 German-made Leopard 2 tanks promised to Ukraine last year by Denmark and the Netherlands will be delivered to Ukraine before the end summer, the Dutch Minister of Defense announced on Thursday.

kyiv "urgently needs more military support, given heavy fighting on the battlefield" , said Ruben Brekelmans.

“These tanks can play an important role in enabling the Ukrainian army to defend itself against Russian forces,” he added, quoted in a statement.

Denmark and the Netherlands announced last year the purchase of this military equipment for 165 million euros. In recent months, they have been "refurbished and tested", according to the Dutch government.

"Yesterday and today the last two Leopard 2s are undergoing their verification tests", Mr Brekelmans said. "The 14 tanks will be delivered simultaneously before the end of the summer".

Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark had promised in 2023 to Ukraine "at least" 100 Leopard 1 A5 tanks, older models of combat armored vehicles.

Mobilizing the defense industry

Ukraine, which suffers from a deficit of men and weapons compared to the Russian army, is seeking to mobilize the European and American defense industry to help its army.

At a NATO summit earlier this month, the Allies notably announced the imminent transfer of F-16 fighters manufactured American, new anti-aircraft defense systems, requested by kyiv to protect its cities and infrastructures, constantly pounded by Moscow.
