War in Ukraine: What are the robotic “war dogs” used by the Ukrainian army for, costing €9,000 each ?

Robotic dogs can perform several missions such as reconnaissance or ammunition delivery. They are present on the ground alongside Ukrainian soldiers.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) announced the use of robot dogs for surveillance on the front line, via a message published on Telegram by the Khortytsia operational-strategic group. These robots, used by the “Medoid” unit (Honey Badger), are deployed to eastern Ukraine and are helping to "thin out the ranks of the occupiers".

The footage shows a robotic dog operating alongside a Ukrainian soldier. The military said the robots can perform reconnaissance missions in forests and urban areas, and are capable of delivering supplies, including ammunition and grenades, even to areas blocked by the enemy, Kyiv Post reports.

“It [the dog] can be controlled by an operator or follow a predefined route. Its small silhouette makes it almost invisible”, explains the soldier. The robots are camouflaged according to the environment. For example, in the forest, they are covered with fabric while in an urban environment, different materials are used to conceal them. They record and transmit images in real time, providing the operator with a direct view of the battlefield.

An advantage over the enemy

These robots serve as a “basic platform on which all relevant technologies can be integrated”, the soldier adds, stressing that “warfare is evolving, and those who adapt will have an advantage over the enemy”.

Ukraine has received more than 30 British-made robot dogs, known as Brit Alliance Dogs (BAD2), each costing around $9,000. The sophisticated ground drones are equipped with advanced technology such as remote sensing and a thermal camera, allowing them to navigate difficult terrain, deliver essential supplies or conduct reconnaissance missions.

Brit Alliance has praised the robots' capabilities, saying they can “move through rubble, climb over obstacles or traverse open terrain silently”, while maintaining “high efficiency”.
