Watch out for fires during the holiday season

As the holiday season approaches, the Montreal Fire Department (SIM) would like to give the public some advice in order to avoid unfortunate incidents.

The SIM recommends installing the Christmas tree away from heat sources to minimize the risk of fire. It is also advisable to turn off the tree lights when going to bed or when no one is home.

It goes without saying that candles should be extinguished when they are finished using them, and they should be placed in a place out of the reach of children or animals.

Who says holiday season, also says cooking. The SIM thus reminds to never leave the oven unattended and to ensure that the smoke alarm is installed and functional. Wood-burning or propane-burning appliances also deserve special attention.

Finally, exits must be accessible, visible and, above all, well cleared of snow, in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises in the event of a fire.
