As soon as Yates' novel was published in 1961, various industry figures expressed interest in making it into a film, but eventually the author, who was very interested in seeing his work adapted, died without having saw his wish come true. Years later, after the project had sat on the shelf for decades, the adaptation rights were bought by BBC Films and it began to take shape.
In 2008, finally, the film saw the light of day, with mostly positive reviews and discreet recognition, but in no way can it be considered a failure.
