Wearing the uniform at school in Béziers: how it works, launch date, establishments concerned... we explain

À partir du 26 février, les élèves de l'école Mairan viendront tous vêtus de façon identique. Midi Libre – C.G.

From Monday February 26, at the end of the winter holidays, 719 students from Béziers will wear uniforms. This is part of the experiment desired by Minister Gabriel Attal and to which the mayor of Béziers, Robert Ménard, logically immediately joined. He himself had defended the wearing of the blouse in 2014… Today, the Mairan, Chevalière, Rolland and Riquet-Renand schools are concerned. They all validated the principle in council.

The implementation of uniforms at school on an experimental basis will begin on Monday, February 26, upon returning from the winter holidays, in four schools in Béziers. We indeed knew that the city of Riquet had applied to the government to participate in the  test of "common clothing" proposed by Gabriel Attal, then Minister of Education, and that it had been retained.

A keychain worth 200 €

Now, the timetable is accelerating since the mayor of Béziers, Robert Ménard, has decided not to wait until September 2024 to get started. "I had defended this idea of uniform from the start because it solves certain problems, including financial ones", he believes. Indeed, a keychain worth 200 euros will be given to the children of the schools concerned. This package will be financed half by the State and half by the City. "It's also the best way to fight against absolute consumerism, to erase social and income differences between parents", underlines Robert Ménard. "Moreover, I remind you that this is a 2-year experiment, it is stupid to pose the debate on the ground for or against. We will experiment and we will be able to learn from it. But today, overseas, there is the uniform, in French high schools abroad, in establishments of excellence too. If it wasn't useful, it would have been deleted."

Four schools validated the principle in council

The ministry asked the City of Béziers to implement the experiment in four schools. The schools Mairan (hyper center), Rolland (hyper center), Riquet-Renand (city center),   Chevalière (Injalbert district) validated the principle by voting for this measure in council. When requested, the Amandiers school refused in the school council by one vote. Note that the establishments chosen are located in socially different areas, from the working-class neighborhood to the more chic one. A total of 719 children from Béziers will soon wear their new outfits to head to school.

A uniform currently being designed and a crest for each school

"We are in the process of choosing uniforms", explains the mayor of Béziers. At the request of the families who were consulted, explains the first magistrate, the City is moving towards a blazer on top, a choice of a skirt or pants (or Bermuda shorts) on the bottom. A supplier was chosen, the Perez company, based in the region. "We have the models, we are moving forward." The fittings will be carried out soon. A coat of arms has also been created, it will each time bear the inscription of the establishment.

In 2014, the blouse had not been adopted

Since 2014, Robert Ménard had wantedé implement the blouse in the schools of his city. 2,500 blouses were thus produced. manufactured by the Béziers company Galy. But the school councils had voted to do so. against wearing this blouse. Only students from Sainte-Madeleine, then directed by the departmental advisor Nicole Zénon (supported by Robert M&eacute ;nard) had carried it. Leaving a substantial stock in the hands of the municipality.
