West Nile virus in Gard and Hérault: death of several horses, suspicion of contamination among a breeder… it is urgent

In Gard and Hérault, horse contamination is increasing and the situation is now alarming.

The situation is urgent. West Nile continues to spread worryingly in Hérault and Gard. Cédric Gassies of the Ecuries de la Chantalette in Marsillargues in Hérault himself has neurological symptoms of the virus without knowing yet if he is contaminated (he was tested and has been waiting for the results for several days).

The Hérault breeder has lost a horse and of the 28 tested, 26 are positive for the virus. In a message to the LR-RN MP for the 9th constituency of Hérault, Charles Alloncle, he warned of the urgency of the situation with the return of mosquitoes and expressed concern that no mosquito control had taken place despite his requests to the competent authorities. “This situation is becoming more and more critical because our horses are particularly exposed to West Nile, a deadly virus in many cases!”, he wrote.

Mosquito control

The MP who had met several breeders at the beginning of the week has in turn alerted the Hérault prefecture. In particular, he is calling for an emergency mosquito control campaign, the establishment of a 7-day-a-week on-call service for laboratories, a compensation procedure, and the establishment of a strategic stock of vaccines.

Let us recall that several horses have died in the Gard and Hérault since the end of the summer and that three cases have been detected in humans.
