The exhibition ’La Beauté et le Geste" by Laurent Perbos, professor of Fine Arts in Sète, took up residence at the Palais Bourbon in Paris, until& ;rsquo;to September 22. Six Venus de Milo, colorful and sporty, stand proudly in front of the columns of the building housing the National Assembly.

A clear idea

“When the National Assembly contacted me in 2023, my project was clear. Paris in 2024 was associated with two things: the neoclassical city par excellence and sport. So, combining sport and ancient sculpture was obvious. The Venus de Milo was perfect for the Olympics because it is one of the most famous works in the world and it is exhibited at the Louvre. It was a logical choice,”, says Laurent Perbos.

Fighting social problems

The artist was keen to fight against certain social problems, such as the place of women in sport. “I wanted to break the idea that we have of sport being associated with the strong man. Choosing the Venus de Milo was also a bias. “I wanted to empower women by portraying them as goddesses of beauty and making sport elegant,” the artist says.

The choice of colors was carefully considered by the artist. The Venuses had to be different colors.“I wanted to fight against all discrimination. I mixed the colors of the rainbow so as not to highlight one community more than another. It was also a little nod to ancient polychromy", he explains.

"An all-inclusive work"

"I wanted to create an all-inclusive work, so that everyone could recognize themselves in it. I decided to add two arms to all Venuses except one. I wanted to highlight the Olympics as a whole. The Paralympics are often under-represented and this is not normal", says Laurent Perbos.

He also wanted to highlight different sports. Some have been practiced since Antiquity, such as javelin throwing or archery, and others are more contemporary, such as basketball or surfing. To best respect the practice of the disciplines, he surrounded himself with sportswomen to study their gestures at the time of effort. "I do not didn't want the goddesses to be frozen, he concluded.
