“White supremacy”, homophobia, and close to the RN: what is the GUD, the ultra-right union that Gérald Darmanin wants to dissolve

Le ministre de l'Intérieur a annoncé ce mercredi 19 juin qu'il comptait proposer au président de la République la dissolution du GUD, régulièrement sous le feu de l'actualité pour ses actions violentes.

Gérald Darmanin announced on Wednesday that he would “propose to the President of the Republic” the dissolution of the GUD (Groupe union défense), a ultra-right student union that was very active in the 70s, dormant since 2017 and recently reactivated.

"White supremacy"

"It's a group that's very friendly with a lot of people from the National Rally (…) These are people who think that there is a white supremacy, who make extremely anti-Semitic remarks serious", added the Minister of the Interior on BFMTV, specifying that he had been working on this issue for "nine months".

"I did not wait for this legislative election", he continued. With its black flags marked with the Celtic cross, the student union, "brand" history of the French extreme right born in 1968 at the Parisian University of Assas, remains active.

In reaction this Wednesday morning, Jordan Bardella, campaigning with the RN for these early legislative elections, also assures that he will dissolve the GUD if he becomes Prime Minister.&nbsp ;

Homophobic attack in Paris

Never dissolved but dormant since 2017, the GUD announced its return at the end of 2022. It has since acted as a link between ultra-right movements, like a ' sports weekend" organized last spring in Saint-Cloud park (Hauts-de-Seine) which brought together dozens of activists.

Known for its violent actions, the GUD regularly returns to the spotlight. Loïk Le Priol, former 'gudard', is the main suspect in the March 2021 murder of former Argentine rugby international Federico Martin Aramburu.

Last week, four ultra-right activists were convicted for their participation in a homophobic attack in Paris while they were "celebrating" the victory of the RN in the European elections.

Proximity to the RN and small satellite groups

Among them was Gabriel Loustau, 23 years old, a figure in the GUD and son of Axel Loustau, former activist in this student organization, former RN elected official and formerly close to Marine Le Pen. Frédéric Châtillon, ex-president of the GUD, is also a long-time friend of Marine Le Pen.

Small groups – since dissolved – such as the Social Bastion (2017-2019) or the Zouaves Paris (2018-2022), were created by GUD activists. Among them, Marc de Caqueray-Valmenier, alleged leader of the Zouaves, convicted and incarcerated several times in recent years.
