Winter storm set to hit Vancouver on New Years Eve

A winter storm is expected to hit Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley over New Years weekend, Environment Canada reported on Friday evening.

The Federal meteorological agency issued a winter storm advisory for the area, warning of strong winds, snow, rain, freezing rain and even possible flooding.

Metro Vancouver, the Greater Vancouver Valley Fraser and areas of the Sea to Sky Highway could see a significant mix of snow, rain, strong wind, freezing rain and even possible flooding this weekend.

The agency reported that up to 10 centimeters of snow is expected in some areas from Saturday, with higher amounts near Hope, and up to 40 millimeters of rain on Sunday.

There is also a risk of freezing rain overnight Saturday and Sunday morning, and strong winds that can reach ndre 90 km/h Sunday near the Strait of Georgia, the agency warned.

Residents are advised to stay alert, check in with loved ones, family, friends and neighbors, and to keep emergency supplies in them, such as extra blankets and jumper cables.
