Russia secured their ticket to the semi-finals of the World Junior Hockey Championship by defeating Germany by a 2-1 score on Saturday at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

Danil Bashkirov scored the winning goal for the Russians in the second period. His teammate Vasily Ponomarev opened the scoring in the first twenty.
The Germans closed the gap in the third period thanks to Florian Elias’ fourth goal of the tournament. The latter came close to leveling the odds at the end of the game, but goalkeeper Yaroslav Askarov closed the door to preserve his team’s lead.
