Facebook is a “company proudly american”, which would not have succeeded without “the laws encouraging competition and innovation”, will declare on Wednesday its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, during a hearing of the four giants of the tech to the Congress on possible anti-competitive practices.
As Sundar Pichai (Alphabet, parent company Google), Tim Cook (Apple) and Jeff Bezos (Amazon), the boss will have to defend its platform, accused the left or right side to become too dominant.
In excerpts of his speech can be consulted by the AFP on Tuesday, he presents his arguments, and calls, in particular, to the economic patriotism of elected officials.
“We believe in certain values – democracy, competition, inclusion, freedom of expression – on which the american economy has been built”, stated he.
“There are no guarantees that our values will win. For example, China built its own version of the internet on very different ideas, and exports this vision in other countries.”
Mark Zuckerberg had already used this argument during a hearing in October on its proposed digital currency, before the parliamentary Committee on financial services.
It also reminds us that, in his view, governments and regulators should “play a more active role” to “update the rules of the internet” in terms of moderation of content.
The billionaire thus anticipates the critical predictable that it may suffer: many democrats and civil society are raised against the network, considered to be too lenient vis-à-vis the messages and videos of the extreme right or some insulting words of president Donald Trump.
The republicans, themselves, consider themselves to be censored by platforms based in Silicon Valley, California, a bastion of democrat.
But the hearing is expected to focus on possible abuse of dominant position by the four giants.
On this topic, Mark Zuckerberg also takes the lead in addressing the issue of acquisitions, which have enabled him to transform a social network in empire, composed of two platforms (Facebook and Instagram), two couriers (Messenger and WhatsApp), and other derived products, services for professional video games.
Many opportunities to collect and analyse personal data as a key engine of the digital advertising, a sector that Facebook and Google have largely dominated.
“Instagram and WhatsApp have become what they are through the infrastructure of Facebook”, states the boss.
“They have matured their services using the infrastructure and low-cost on able to Facebook, and have been able to tackle the spam and dangerous content thanks to our teams and our technology.”
Since this year, the family of four applications has reached nearly $ 3 billion monthly users.
