The Frenchman has been brilliant since the start of the competition, and had already achieved the best times, notably with a lead of more than three seconds in the semi-final. He is the fourth Frenchman to win a gold medal after rugby players Léon Marchand and Pauline Ferrand-Prévot.
Gestin is the third French Olympic champion, after Tony Estanguet and Denis Gargaud Chanut.
