Too exhausted to get out of the canyon: a teenager and her mother call for help while stuck in the Concluses gorges

On July 31, 2024, Gard firefighters came to the aid of a mother and daughter in a canyon. The victims, dehydrated and exhausted, were unable to return on their own.

The heat got the better of them. Two women who had gone hiking in the Concluses gorges had to contact the firefighters so that they could extract them from a canyon in which they were stuck on Wednesday.

Exhausted and dehydrated

At around 6pm, the firefighters received a call for an emergency in the gorges:“Two women, 44 and 13, exhausted, dehydrated and unable to get out of the canyon on their own.”

Safe and sound

The emergency services deployed an ambulance, a team specializing in hazardous environments and a civil security helicopter.

The two victims were airlifted and then taken care of by the ambulance. Safe and sound, they were able to be left on site to return by their own means.

Beware of the heat

On Wednesday, the Gard was, like this Thursday and until Friday, placed on orange heatwave alert. The mercury reached 38 °C in the department.

It is also recommended to avoid physical activities during the hottest hours of the day, to cool off regularly in air-conditioned spaces and to always keep water within reach.
