Summer is well established in Lozère! After introducing you to their favorite swimming spots, the editorial staff of Midi Libre takes you on their favorite summer outings in the department. This Monday, August 12, 2024, head to the unmissable Lake Charpal on the Palais-du-Roi plateau.

A few days after trying to cool off with our favorite swimming spots, we are giving you our must-see summer walks in the department. After the Deroc waterfall, this time we are heading to the Charpal lake, at the foot of the Fortunio thing, on the Palais-du-Roi plateau, in Margeride. This basin is fed by the Colagne and supplies drinking water to the town of Mende and its surroundings. This essential place for rest or hiking is located about thirty minutes from the prefecture of Lozère.

An 8.7 km trail surrounded by flora and fauna

On the edge of the lake, relaxation is guaranteed. As soon as you arrive, you will find a green space or tables located in the shade to picnic with family or friends. Midi Libre chose to put on your sneakers, put on your cap and take your lunch to do the hike. It is in the form of a loop and is 8.7 km long. Along the trail, hikers will find signs indicating the distance traveled and the distance remaining.

“The journey allows us to retrace our steps, which suits us, smiles Christian, from Montpellier accompanied by his wife and two children. With a 3-year-old and an 8-year-old daughter, we prefer to do a small part of the route and turn around at the end of our picnic." All along the lake, you will find small areas to rest, read a book and of course enjoy the view, while being isolated from the rest of the world.

Between a view of the lake and immersion in the heart of the forest

Some walking areas (or mountain biking, because yes, mountain bikers are welcome) are done in the sun.

The trees provide a complete change of scenery and guaranteed shade. But be careful where you put your feet. Some roots stick out, so don't forget to lift your feet to avoid tripping.

The water dam marks the end of the hike

After more than eight kilometers of trails, you will arrive at the Charpal Lake dam. The final stretch of this hike. In a few figures, this passage is 224 m long and 16 m high.

This hike remains ideal for both walking enthusiasts and experts, as well as for tourists and locals. A man shouts to his elderly father, a few meters from the finish: “You can say that you did it!” And you, are you tempted ?
