Drug dealers in Isère have their rights to social assistance removed, in whole or in part, thanks to an agreement between the Grenoble public prosecutor's office and the local family allowance fund.

This measure is unique in France. The Isère Family Allowance Fund (CAF) is removing dealers' allowances to combat drug trafficking, reports Le Figaro.

This information sharing, set up since 2020, is done in coordination with the Grenoble prosecutor's office, according to information from Parisien.

What sanctions ?

Final convictions are forwarded by the public prosecutor to the CAF. Sanctions can range from temporary withdrawal to a reduction in rights to social benefits, whether family allowances, RSA, activity bonus or housing assistance. Reason given: failure to declare income received illegally.

Extending the system?

55 people have so far been reported by the public prosecutor to the Isère CAF, but not all of them have been sanctioned.

“There is no reason why traffickers should win on both sides tables !", underlines the public prosecutor of Grenoble, Éric Vaillant, quoted by Le Parisien.

The idea of punishing any person convicted of drug trafficking, by temporarily excluding them from the benefit of CAF social assistance, is not new. In October 2011, a bill was tabled in the National Assembly, our colleagues recall.

Why not extend this system to the entire territory ? The national management of the Family Allowance Funds (CNAF) avoids the subject, highlighting its policy of combating fraud.
