Grabels: a class adapted for autistic children

Une classe en maternelle adaptée pour les enfants autistes. Midi Libre – SYLVIE CAMBON

In 2018, the municipality of Grabels took the initiative to open a class for children with intellectual disabilities. A successful operation and an example to follow.

Where there's a will, there's a way. The adage is well known, but few are able to put it into practice. The mayor of Grabels, René Revol, made it his own in 2018. With his municipal team, he decided to open a nursery class adapted for autistic children at the Jean-Ponsy school. Thanks to this class, these children, who have difficulty interacting with the outside world, can integrate an “ordinary” school.

To accommodate these children, work was carried out to fit out the classroom so that the children feel comfortable there. The ceilings were lowered and the windows replaced to obtain more suitable lighting. The acoustics were also worked on and adapted. All conditions for the children to better understand their environment and be able to attend school like their other classmates. Mission accomplished with children happy to go to school and parents delighted to follow their progress.
