Tori Hunter, a 26-year-old Canadian blogger, posted a video on TikTok where she talks about the obstacles people in wheelchairs can face after an ordeal " ;terrifying" by plane, reports BBC.
A precarious situation
In the video, we can see the young woman disembarking from the flight with the help of staff at an airport in Costa Rica. She appears distressed as she is carried in a wheelchair precariously down the stairs to get off the plane. Her father had to hold her head to prevent injury. However, she provided information on her situation several months in advance.
According to our colleagues, passengers are not allowed to bring their own wheelchair into the main cabin of the plane for safety reasons.
There was no airplane bridge that day, so all passengers had to go down the steps. Tori Hunter has very little neck movement and uses an electric wheelchair, due to a neuromuscular disease called spinal muscular atrophy. "I hope this process will be something I never have to experience again , I love traveling and I will never let that stop me from discovering the world", she said, admitting to having felt in danger during the descent.
Sad and frustrated
"We are sad and frustrated to see yet another poor experience for passengers with disabilities when traveling by plane. It's very visible how uncomfortable and fearful Tori feels getting off the flight. Usually the wheelchairs are collected in the hold and used to take the plane's owner to the terminal via a bridge. When Ms. Hunter landed in Liberia, she said she was carried off the flight in an insufficiently equipped wheelchair", denounced Rights on Flights on BBC .
An Air Canada release stated that the airport was unable to provide a jet bridge and therefore had to use a method alternative. "All protocols to assist guests with disabilities were followed", it says.
