L’église Saint-François a été édifiée entre 1863 et 1873 sur les plans de l’architecte toulousain Henry Bach, sur une paroisse fondée en 1828. AD

The sculptor has worked on various religious buildings such as the Abbey of Conques, the church of La Couvertoirade, and that of Saint-Jean du Bruel.

A monumental cross 5 meters high made by the artist Jean-Jacques Bris will soon be erected in the church of Saint-François de Millau. Unless something happens to the contrary, it should be blessed during a mass on November 1st.

Born in Brittany in 1949, the sculptor Jean-Jacques Bris has lived for 30 years in the small village of Saint-Gleys or Seingleys depending on the chosen toponymy, in the commune of Saint-Jean-du-Bruel. Steeped in metalworking since childhood, attracted very early by art, Jean-Jacques Bris followed a professional training that he deepened in the crucible of different forge, foundry, metalwork workshops, learning various techniques for shaping metal.

A diligent student in various drawing, modeling and sculpture workshops in prestigious establishments such as the Decorative Arts in Strasbourg, the Fine Arts in Reims and the Boulle School in Paris, Jean-Jacques Bris acquired the technique of metalworking, foundry and chiseling from the Compagnons du Devoir association from 1970 to 1978.

Patinated brass with gold leaf

Dividing his time between commissioning contemporary liturgical furniture and more personal work, the sculptor has already officiated locally in religious buildings such as the Abbey of Conques, the church of La Couvertoirade, that of Saint-Jean du Bruel or even the church of Saint-Martin in Lacanourgue.

The result of an order placed at the end of November by the Millau deanery, this monumental work measuring 5 metres high, a cross in patinated brass with gold leaf, is currently in the workshop. It should join the statue of the Holy Virgin and the two paintings representing the Lamentation by November.

“Ordinary materials and precious materials”

“I use several techniques, different metals. By combining ordinary materials and precious materials, I realize that they complement and enrich each other. What interests me is the goal, that the material is refined, that it is at the service of light … to give the impression that light radiates from dark matter”, explains the artist on his website.
