A new technical inspection in force from April 15: which is now concerned ?

Almost four months after the publication in the Official Journal of the new technical control procedures, the countdown for their application has started. The new technical inspection comes into force on April 15. Calendar, application, progress, etc. : here's what you need to know.

Who is affected ?

The new technical inspection broadens the category of vehicles which are concerned. From next April 15, it becomes compulsory for mopeds, motorcycles, scooters, motorized tricycles, quads and cars without a license. In other words, all vehicles in the so-called "L" category. Classic cars put into circulation before 1960 and sports motorcycles are exempt.

When should the check be carried out ?

The appointments for the various technical inspections over time are made in irregular stages. The first inspection must be carried out within 6 months preceding the fifth year of the first entry into circulation. The following ones will then take place every 3 years. As a reminder, for cars, it is, respectively, 4 and 2 years. Concerning classic vehicles, the time between two technical inspections is increased to 5 years, except in the case of resale.

What is the timetable for entry into force ?

In order to avoid the "bottleneck by having all vehicles enter the system at the same time”, according to the government, the entry into force of this new control technique will be progressive over time. It will extend over two years, until 2026. By the end of 2024 for vehicles registered before January 1, 2017.

"For those put into circulation before January 1, 2017 and whose anniversary date of first putting into circulation is before April 15 of the year, the check is to be carried out between April 15 and August 14, 2024", specifies the site Thank you for l'info.

For vehicles registered between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019, the new technical inspection must be carried out "at the latest, within 4 months after the date anniversary of their first  put into circulation". Concerning those registered between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021, it must be carried out "at the latest, within 4 months after the anniversary date of their first  put into circulation".

Finally, with regard to vehicles registered from January 1, 2022, the check must be carried out "within 6 months before& ;nbsp;the 5th anniversary".

What is the content of the technical inspection ?

The decree and order published on October 23, 2023 in the Official Journal specify the content of the technical inspection for the new vehicles concerned. "During the visit, the controller will check 80 checkpoints, compared to 133 for a private car", specifies Thank you for the& ;#39;info.

The checkpoints are as follows: vehicle identification, braking equipment, steering, visibility, lights, reflective devices and electrical equipment, axles, wheels, tires, suspension, chassis, chassis accessories and other controlled vehicle equipment, noise and pollution pollution.
