Adriana Lima, Madonna… We are often surprised by these unrecognizable and puffy faces of stars on red carpets or on Instagram. The reason is to be found in aesthetic medicine and hyaluronic acid injections.
As a reminder, hyaluronic acid is a hydrophilic substance, capable of capturing and retaining water, which ensures the plump appearance of the face. It is used to add volume, fill hollows, furrows and wrinkles. Botulinum toxin ("Botox") is used to paralyze muscles and prevent the formation of wrinkles.

Concretely, how can we explain the mechanisms of this phenomenon known as "pillow face", or "cushion face", to image these swollen figures with distorted features ?
Three reasons for this, details the French Association of Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Medicine (AFME):
Excessive injections of hyaluronic acid during a single session; Injections carried out in the wrong place and which distort facial features; Injections too close together.
"As a result, hyaluronic acid accumulates under the skin, with the body not having time to assimilate or break it down naturally", < /em>explains AFME. The product, concentrated in too large a quantity in the same place, can then migrate and fill an area that is normally deeper. The facial features then no longer seem natural at all.

"L’pillow face effect’is often obtained due to poor placement and an excessive amount of product injected into dark circles, cheeks and tear valleys. When they are excessively injected with fillers (filler product, editor's note), their abnormally pronounced volume closes the gaze, deepens the eyes and erases them. From then on, facial features are distorted and the harmony of proportions is reversed, details the Parisian Lutétia aesthetic medicine center.
In addition, adds the French Association of Aesthetic and Anti-Aging Medicine, injections are similar to slight trauma, their repetition in the short term can lead to fibrosis, i.e. rsquo;tissue invasion by collagen fibers. A phenomenon which further adds volume to the face, induration of tissues and loss of suppleness of the skin.
An addiction to injections
If the injections are carried out at appropriate intervals and quantities, the product may degrade naturally. The resorption time of hyaluronic acid is quite long, between 6 and 18 months, depending on the concentration of the product and the area treated. There is therefore no reason to intervene earlier.
But in some patients, addiction to the injections may occur. "It is therefore essential that the doctor of your choice applies his role as advisor, and knows how to curb excessive requests. Objective: a harmonious and attractive face that remains natural, concludes AFME.
