After the snack bar fire in the center of Montpellier, the adjoining hotel closed

A fryer fire broke out yesterday around 9 a.m. in the Grill house restaurant, rue Maguelone in Montpellier, between Place de la Comédie and Saint-Roch train station. The four-story building, which notably houses the Europa hotel, was evacuated. The firefighters quickly intervened, as did the municipal police and the national police. The mayor also went to the scene of the disaster.

Tram traffic only resumed in the afternoon

The intervention of the firefighters continued until midday. Tram traffic was disrupted. Service to Louis-Blanc, Corum and Comédie stations was suspended, giving rise to diversions of lines 1 and 2. Traffic resumed at the start of the afternoon. The Grill house restaurant was the subject, on December 18, of an administrative closure measure by the prefecture following breaches of food hygiene rules, noted during a control. This measure was to be lifted as soon as the restaurant complied.

The Europa Hotel closed

The fire once extinguished, the State services and the Sdis (Departmental Fire and Rescue Service) asked the municipality for passage of the fire. a security commission within the adjoining Europa hotel. This decided to close the establishment. The ten hotel guests present at the time of the disaster were evacuated and relocated to other establishments. The four rooms located above the snack bar were invaded by smoke. "The firefighters also had to break the floor to check the condition of the beams", explains the hotel manager. The establishment is forced to temporarily cease its activity in order to clean and repair the damage caused. Nothing to do with shortcomings prior to the disaster, assures the boss of the hotel establishment.
