“All the goals set will be achieved”: but what is Vladimir Putin talking about and what he hopes for with the war in Ukraine ?

On September 30, 2024, the Russian president assured that the objectives concerning the war in Ukraine will be achieved. Vladimir Putin refers to his "holy war". We explain.

"All the objectives set will be achieved", declared the head of state on the occasion of the second anniversary of Russia's annexation of four Ukrainian regions, notes AFP. The Kremlin celebrated the “Reunification Day” with Lugansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, areas taken by Russia since the beginning of its invasion.

The "Holy War"

The invasion of Ukraine is a sacred matter for the Kremlin. Last March, a close friend of Vladimir Putin in the KGB drafted a vast plan mentioning Russia's objectives concerning the war in Ukraine.

Unveiled Since then, he has revealed the plan to restore the unity of the Russian people. He intends to bring down the whole ;Ukraine in "Russia's exclusive sphere of influence". The Kremlin suggests that its territorial ambitions are insatiable.

Because "The possibility that a Russophobic political regime, hostile to Russia and its people, will govern on this territory” is unbearable to Vladimir Putin and "must be completely excluded".

The Russian president also fears that his population will continue to decline. His vast country has only 144 million inhabitants. Thus, he wants to implement "an intensive natural population growth". The document mentions a target of 600 million Russians.

More than four regions

This document implies that, more than the annexation of four regions, Russia wants more. It poses a risk of total invasion to Ukraine. It is worth noting that neither Ukraine nor the international community have recognized Lugansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson as Kremlin territory since it declared their annexation.

“While Putin initially tried to justify the invasion as a pragmatic response to NATO expansion, it is now clear that he views the war as a sacred trust and will not stop until Ukraine is wiped off the map “European” declared the American think tank Atlantic Council when this information was published.
