An unlimited package to take the train: for who, when, how... everything you need to know about the Rail Pass

This April 3, 2024, "all regions" French authorities have finally agreed to set up a "rail pass" during the summer, which would allow young people to travel in France unlimitedly, announced &nbsp ;Patrice Vergriete, Minister for Transport. We take stock of what we know about this package.

The minister also thanked Carole Delga, president of Occitanie and Regions of France, who “remobilized the regional presidents" on this file.

The idea of the Rail Pass is simple: allow travelers to travel at will on the daily train network, for a low-cost package.

It would be  "in a sort of social pricing for young people to allow them to discover the all the regions of our beautiful country, explained Patrice Vergriete on March 6 during questions to the government in the Senate.

Who will benefit from it ?

This experiment with a Rail Pass is aimed at people under 27, according to the Minister for Transport Patrice Vergriete who adds that nearly 700 people are under 27 years old. 000 young people will be able to benefit from it.

However, this device, directly inspired by its German neighbor, the Deutschland ticket, is only a "first step". The government also wishes to apply the measure in Ile-de-France from 2025, reports FranceInfo.

What price and what transport ?

This package will be priced at 49 euros and will allow you to travel throughout France over the period July and August and "80% of the cost shortfall for the regions will be covered by the State’, said the minister at FranceInfo.

It must concern regional TER trains and Intercités. The "pass rail" will not include mainline trains, therefore no TGV.

In September 2023, Clément Beaune also specified that the rail pass could include buses, metros, and trams in large cities. Information that still remains to be confirmed.
