CINEMA – After a resounding success in the United States, the film Sound of Freedom, directed by Alejandro Monteverde, arrives on French screens. It will be released in theaters on November 15, five days before International Children's Rights Day, celebrated on November 20. The most impatient can, however, purchase tickets for the public preview screening on November 7 at 8 p.m., at the UGC Normandie, avenue des Champs-Élysées. We have seen this film which has already generated a lot of ink, not always in the direction desired by its authors.

As co-writers of the film Sound of Freedom, it has been difficult to see the partisan controversy we distract from the deep intention of our work: to use the power of cinema to raise awareness of the reality of child trafficking”, deplore Alejandro Monteverde (also director of the film) and Rod Barr in a column published on August 14, 2023 in The Hollywood Reporter.

“We were stunned to discover the controversy which surrounded the release of the film in the United States last July, such was the gap with the content of the film” , echoes the distributor, Saje Distribution.

A controversy that reached as far as France, since even before the release of the film in France, the media mentioned the “conspiracy theses” that they believe it relays.

That’s not the case. Sound of Freedom is above all a thrilling action film, inspired by the life of Tim Ballard, a former special agent of the United States Department of Homeland Security , assigned to the unit responsible for combating child crime on the Internet. After undercover missions to combat child sex tourism, Tim Ballard resigned in 2013 to create Operation Undergroung Railroad, a foundation whose purpose is to save child victims of networks reducing them to sexual slavery.

With Sound of Freedom, the viewer follows the hero, played by Jim Caviezel, in his work as a federal agent and then in perilous operations rescue which will take him to South America.

A captivating thriller inspired by true events

The film is extremely effective. We see it as a captivating thriller, with a rhythmic direction and served by moving acting. We never get bored for a minute. But we also know that the story is inspired by real events, so from moving, the film becomes overwhelming. And the message conveyed by the director gets across. Hundreds of thousands of children are victims of sexual violence and trafficking around the world. There are more human beings enslaved in the 21st century than there were when slavery was legal. And as painful as this reality is, we must stop giving in to the temptation to turn our eyes away from it. So that this stops. So that an international struggle can finally be put in place that meets the challenges.

“If there is one subject that can unite everyone, it is that of putting an end to child trafficking. We are still convinced of this. Trafficking of children is not a right or left issue. It is a fundamental human rights issue, which touches us deeply as human beings”, pleads Alejandro Monteverde. This is the whole purpose of his film which aims to “raise awareness of the reality of child trafficking”and who achieves this masterfully. To get the message across, spectators are invited to buy, if they can afford it, additional tickets which will be distributed free of charge to those who would like to see the film, but for whom the price of a screening would represent a financial effort. too important. This special “call for donations” made it possible to distribute more than 9 million places across the Atlantic!

Homayra Sellier, the president and founder of the international NGO Innocence in Danger which is sponsoring the release of the film in France, recalls that Europe is also concerned by child trafficking. “We must not say that this crime only exists on the American border and in Latin American countries”, she warns. Child sex trafficking is a reality whose existence “we must accept everywhere in the world, including in France”, she insists.

Alejandro Monteverde will talk about his film to the readers of France-Soir the week before the theatrical release of Sound of freedom.

Online ticketing to attend the preview on November 7.
