Russian Daniil Medvedev, world No.3, overthrew No.6 Alexander Zverev after being down two sets zero to win 5-7, 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 7 -6 (7/5), 6-3 Friday and join Jannik Sinner in the final of the Australian Open.

Medvedev will try to win a second Grand Slam trophy after the US Open 2021 against the Italian, world No.4, who brought down Serbian No.1 Novak Djokovic earlier Friday.

A qualification far from obvious for the Russian, when he committed a double fault in the decisive game of the fourth set, allowing the great German to be at two points from a first final in Melbourne.

But faced with a "Sascha" Zverev feverish as he finished, Medvedev was able to accelerate to get back to two sets everywhere, he who had never managed to worry his rival in the first two sets.

After two decisive games won, the blow was too harsh for Zverev, who cracked in the final set and let his opponent fly towards qualification.

The fifth Grand Slam final of his career

"I was a little lost, and in the third set, I said to myself +I want to at least be proud of myself if I lose, to fight until&#39 ;at the end, on every point+", declared Medvedev after the meeting.

“I felt physically tired, I told myself, be more aggressive, if it doesn't work, I would have tried. It worked, I started making better shots and serving better,” he added.

This is the second time since the start of the fortnight that the 27-year-old Muscovite has come back from two sets behind, after his victory in the second round against the Finn Emil Ruusuvuori 3-6, 6-7 (1/7), 6-4, 7-6 (7/1), 6-0.

He will play the fifth Grand Slam final of his career on Sunday, after those of the US Open (2019, 2021) and the Australian Open.

In Melbourne, Medvedev lost in 2021 against Novak Djokovic, then the following year in five sets against Rafael Nadal.

To obtain his first coronation in Australia, Medvedev will have to dominate Sinner, who has only dropped one round since the start of the fortnight. The Russian has won six times in the nine meetings between the two men, but has suffered three defeats in the last three meetings.
