Since the 2019 reform, students have been part of the general social security system, allowing them to save on university registration fees. But student mutual insurance companies still exist, offering supplements adapted to the specific needs of each young person, explains Le Parisien Étudiant.

The role of a student mutual insurance company

Social security reimbursements do not cover all healthcare costs. Mutual insurance companies allow the reimbursement of part or all of the remaining costs for routine care, but also for specialized treatments, such as dental or optical care, which are often expensive.

A certificate of registration in a higher education institution and supporting documents are required to subscribe to student mutual insurance, the rest is handled either on the website of the chosen mutual insurance company or by mail.

How to choose it?

The choice of mutual insurance depends on several criteria. First the price, compare the best value for money of each mutual and their level of reimbursement.

Then the guarantees offered, you have to check what is covered: routine care, optical, dental…

And finally the additional services, some mutuals allow online consultations, or help in case of emergency. Do not forget to inquire about international coverage if a study trip abroad is planned.

Student mutuals also offer useful additional services, such as prevention campaigns: mental health, the dangers of alcohol and drugs… They can offer health centers with reduced or even free consultations and support: psychological, legal, financial and administrative.
