Beware of the size of your luggage on the train: SNCF promises a hefty fine to travelers who do not respect these new rules

The SNCF has announced that it will implement new regulations regarding the size of luggage on its trains.

End of the "tolerance period". Last February, the railway company had already announced that it would implement new rules to regulate the size of luggage on its trains. It had thus left a “tolerance period” for users.

This period will end on September 15th, SNCF Connect indicated on its website. So what types of baggage are affected ? And what risks do passengers risk who do not comply with these regulations ?

What dimensions now ?

Three pieces of baggage are now authorized by the railway company, i.e. two cabin bags (suitcase) and one hand bag. That is to say, baggage that can be stored in the dedicated spaces, under the seat or in the area above the seats provided for this purpose.

And this luggage must not exceed certain dimensions: hand luggage must not exceed 40 cm x 30 cm x 15 cm and cabin suitcases 70 cm x 90 cm x 50 cm.

However, users will be allowed to bring “special luggage” such as scooters, strollers, musical instruments, water boards, snowboards and skis. These must not exceed the dimensions of 130 x 90 cm. Scooters and strollers, for example, will be folded. Other luggage must be transported in its covers.

What are the risks for travelers who do not respect these rules ?

Concerning bicycles, the SNCF requires that they be transported disassembled or folded in a cover bearing a label, which is now mandatory. If users do not comply with this directive, they will have to pay a supplement of 10 euros.

Passengers who travel on TGV Inoui, Ouigo and Intercités and who do not comply with these rules will have to pay a fine of 50 euros.

For oversized luggage, the railway company specifies that it has a delivery service called “my luggage” and which allows them to be shipped to their destination from 32 euros.
