Bodies of two children found under rubble: Building collapse kills three in Italy

Three people died on September 22, 2024, when a building collapsed in Italy. A gas leak could be the cause of the tragedy.

Two young children, a brother and sister, and a woman were killed Sunday near Naples, southern Italy, when the apartment building they were living in collapsed, firefighters said.

The two-story building in the town of Saviano collapsed in the morning, authorities said. “Firefighters found the father and a newborn baby alive, and sadly the lifeless bodies of the other two children,” the firefighters wrote on X.

Three people killed

According to local media, the girl was 4 years old, her brother 6 years old.

After several hours of searching, firefighters, helped by sniffer dogs, discovered in the rubble the body of a third victim, a woman, "who has not yet been identified", Luca Cari, a spokesman for the firefighters, told RaiNews 24.

"It's a woman and we are currently extracting (the body) from the rubble,” he added, stressing that the search operations were complicated.

Local media identified the woman as the grandmother of the deceased children, who lived on the second floor of the building. The mother was still missing, according to media reports.

More than 60 civil protection volunteers were taking part in the rescue operation, according to the Campania region.

Miraculously saved

The father and baby pulled from the rubble were taken to hospital, the father in serious condition.

Images posted by firefighters showed two large holes in the roof of the building, which had partly collapsed.

The collapse could have been caused by a gas explosion, according to media reports.
