CAN 2024: coach Jean-Louis Gasset sacked, while Ivory Coast can still dream of qualifying for the round of 16

Ivory Coast coach Jean-Louis Gasset was sacked on Wednesday for "insufficient results", two days after a rout (0-4) against Equatorial Guinea, in the Cup of # 39;Africa of Nations (CAN), even if the Elephants can still hope to reach the round of 16.

"The contracts of coach-selector Jean-Louis Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant are terminated for insufficient results", indicates the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) in a press release.

The Ivorian Emerse Faé, who was one of Mr. Gasset's deputies, will act in the interim, specifies the body.

After a good start against Guinea-Bissau (2-0), the Ivorians were beaten by Nigeria (1-0), then crushed by Equatorial Guinea (4-0). The fact is that Gasset, coach of Ivory Coast since May 2022, emerged greatly weakened from the humiliation suffered on Monday.

A dotted line qualification

With three points, the Elephants finished 3rd in group A and must wait for the results of the other teams on Wednesday, to know whether or not they will be part of the four best thirds who go to 8th of final.

Two scenarios can still allow Côte d'Ivoire to pass: in group E Mali must beat Namibia and at the same time South Africa must not lose against Tunisia.

Otherwise, in Group F, a victory for Morocco at the expense of Zambia would automatically send Ivory Coast to the final phase.
