“Carnage”: excrement, vegetable crates, knots in the coat… dozens of mistreated animals were saved from a farm

This Monday, May 6, 2024, 54 dogs, six cats, turtles and a bird were seized in Elne, near Perpignan in the Pyrénées-Orientales. They were held in deplorable hygienic conditions. They were able to join several animal rights associations.

This Monday, May 6, 2024, more than fifty dogs, several cats, turtles and a cockatoo were seized, after a report, in an undeclared breeding in Elne, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, near from Perpignan. On site, the animals lived in cages full of excrement, without water or food. Old dogs were found without care.

Deplorable conditions

"The animals had knots in their coats, proof that they were uncared for. There was no water, no food. The parks were filled with excrement. The dogs slept in vegetable crates. The cat litter boxes were overflowing with feces…hellip;. The cockatoo was completely featherless due to stress, says Marina Pastou Santacroce, manager of the Céret refuge.

"When I saw the carnage, I called the departmental population protection directorate who, after viewing the photos, gave me authorization to seize them", adds Marina Pastou Santacroce to l&amp ;rsquo;Independent.

Several animal rights associations

The animal rights associations contacted seized exactly 54 dogs, including 19 chihuahuas and 34 chow-chows, six cats, including ragdolls, eight turtles and a cockatoo. "I called all the shelters in the department.
