Departmental Council: elected officials from Béziers abstain on a measure to simplify access to abortion

La conseillère départementale Nicole Zénon. – M.L.

The vote, which focused on the possibility of performing medical abortions in sexual health centers, was held on April 29.

We know the position on abortion of MP Emmanuelle Ménard, who recently voted against the constitutionalization of abortion. At the Departmental Council, this voice is faithfully relayed by the elected representatives of the Béziers cantons, who united during the assembly of April 29.

This time it was a "regulatory agreement with the Montpellier University Hospital relating to the practice of voluntary termination of pregnancy by medication in sexual health centers", which will take effect on the 21st& nbsp;June. It aims in particular "to enable an increase in the use of early medical abortions in the city", which cannot all be practiced at the Montpellier University Hospital, relying on the network of departmental sexual health centers. In the event of complications, it is also the University Hospital which will take over, both parties agree ;committing to reassess the system every year.

"We must not trivialize abortion"

The agreement clearly states that this medical procedure will be practiced by the doctors and midwives of the Department, the University Hospital undertaking to organize "training aimed at updating all the knowledge required for the practice of medically induced abortions. But for Nicole Zénon, it is precisely this < em>"theoretical and practical training of professionals from sexual health centers" which raises questions. "I am in favor of abortion, but I want to remain faithful to the Veil law. I fear that in the long term, these abortions will be carried out by people who are not health personnel, who are not trained. I have doubts, and that’s why I abstained, I didn’t vote against." "We must not trivialize abortion, adds her group colleague, Marie-Emmanuelle Camous. This must be done in a hospital, not in a health center.

However, for Véronique Calueba, vice-president of the Departmental Council who presented this text, these fears are unfounded : "He There is nothing new in this convention which is not the first of its kind. It allows us to rely on a hospital, and it also allowed me, as a preamble, to congratulate myself on the major progress represented by the entry of abortion into the Constitution. quot; An evocation which surely did not contribute to putting the elected representatives of the "Ménard group" in the best possible conditions. With Gilles Sacaze, Marie Hirth and Denis Marsala (departmental councilor Jean-Louis Raspaud is no longer part of it), the representatives of the three cantons of Béziers have all decided to join forces. abstain on this measure… Finally adopted by a majority of votes.
