Every Wednesday at 6pm, guided tours are organized to learn more about the diverse fauna and flora of the Mediterranean.

At the end of Portiragnes-Plage, next to the Étang de la Riviérette, the Grande Maïre ​​attracts many outdoor enthusiasts. The protected natural site, recognized Natura 2000, opens its doors for escapades between the sea and the canal throughout the summer.

An environmental wealth

Accompanied by an instructor, visitors, armed with their binoculars, will be able to learn more about Mediterranean biodiversity. On the one hand, the site offers a great diversity of panoramas between sansouïre, reed beds and salt meadows. On the other, the Grande Maïre ​​also welcomes a large number of species, including many migratory birds. Grey herons, ringed plovers, egrets, terns and especially flamingos can be seen during the visits. Finally, the local flora decorates the site with its seaside flowers such as the Spanish Iris.

“The fauna was out”

“I'm from the area, and I didn't think we could see so many, so close to home. And what's more, we were lucky, the wildlife was out and about”, says Nathan, a young man from Agath. He continues: “I'm more used to walks in the vineyards and the backcountry. So it's always nice to see activities around the canal and the sea, in the lagoons."

In total, it takes 1h30 to complete the guided tour, led by a coastal professional who takes the time to provide educational information to groups of around twenty visitors. However, it is also possible to explore the site independently and independently. On foot or by bike, several marked circuits of 3, 9 and 11 kilometres around the lagoons are offered.
