It was 11pm on Saturday 7th September when the municipal police of Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin) spotted a motorist driving without headlights or a seat belt. They decided to stop him, but the man fled and sped off at high speed.

Faced with the individual's dangerous driving, the officers quickly stopped the pursuit in order to avoid an accident. But the motorist continued on his way at the same speed, taking reckless risks. A little further on, he then crossed a flashing red light and crashed into the tram.

Six passengers on the tram unharmed

Luckily, at that time, the tram was not very crowded. The six passengers on the tram, like its driver, escaped unharmed. On the other hand, the driver of the car was seriously injured in the head. Taken to hospital as an emergency, he died a few hours later. He was 28 years old.

The man had never been confronted with justice. However, he was driving a car reported stolen in Strasbourg. An investigation was opened by the Mulhouse national police.
