Emmanuel Macron on vacation: despite the Paris Olympics, the President arrived at Fort Brégançon for his vacation

Emmanuel Macron began his traditional summer break at Fort Brégançon, on the Var coast, where he will be this year “intermittently” to continue to follow the Olympic Games, we learned on Monday, July 29 from a source close to the case.

After attending the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics on Friday, and having toured the sports arenas on Saturday to watch the first French medals, the head of state arrived Sunday at the presidents' holiday residence overlooking the Mediterranean in Bormes-les-Mimosas. He is due to take some time off there with his wife Brigitte Macron as he does every year.

The Var prefect has also issued his usual order banning “any protest demonstration or gathering” from Sunday July 28 to Friday August 16 in the town of Bormes-les-Mimosas, considering in particular “that the head of state will reside in the presidential residence at Fort Brégançon”.

“He will be there intermittently this year between monitoring the Games”, whose security he continues to monitor, this source specified. Mr. Macron could also make trips to event sites to encourage other French athletes, and will be at the closing ceremony in the capital on August 11.

A particular political context

He will also attend the international ceremonies of the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings in Provence at the end of the Second World War, on August 15, in the presence of other heads of state and government. He should not deviate from the traditional local ceremony commemorating the liberation of Bormes-les-Mimosas, on August 17, which is often an opportunity to distil a few political messages before the start of the school year.

The holidays come this year in a particular context: the political crisis born of the dissolution of the National Assembly, wanted by the president, and the early legislative elections that did not result in a clear majority is still not resolved. Mr. Macron wanted to declare a "truce" during the Olympic Games, until mid-August, but the left continues to demand Matignon for its candidate Lucie Castets.

In addition, negotiations for a more or less broad coalition should continue behind the scenes, particularly at the initiative of the presidential camp.

According to a member of the government, a council of ministers is planned, but not confirmed, on August 12, the day after the end of the Olympic Games. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and his team have resigned and have been responsible for managing current affairs since July 16, a record length of time under the Fifth Republic.
