European elections have been held in the 27 EU countries since June 6 to designate the 720 members of the European Parliament for five years. In France, where 38 lists are in the running, a record, the ballot is taking place this Sunday, June 9 to elect the 81 French MEPs by direct universal suffrage in one round, on the basis of a voting system with proportional integral.

The minimum threshold for the allocation of seats is between 2% and 5% depending on the country. It was set at 5% in France. During the 2019 election, six French lists gathered more than 5% of the votes. There are seven of them hoping to cross this threshold this year. And seven or eight candidates from Occitanie can hope to win their ticket to Strasbourg.

An increasing participation

In France, where the last polling stations close at 8 p.m., the participation rate was up on Sunday at 5 p.m., at 45.26% against 43.29% during the 2019 election at the same time, according to the Ministry of the Interior. Five years ago, the participation rate reached 50.12% at the end of the vote, marking a clear rebound compared to the 2014 European elections (42.43%).
