Five Russian climbers have died in the Himalayas while climbing Dhaulagiri, the world's seventh highest peak, a Nepalese official said Tuesday.

“Five bodies were discovered by a helicopter rescue team”, Rakesh Gurung of the Tourism Department, in charge of mountaineering, told AFP, stressing that they had “unscrewed”.

The rope team, which was climbing the 8,167-metre-high summit, had not given any sign of life since Sunday evening.

One man survived

A sixth climber, who had turned back before the accident, was rescued and hospitalized in Kathmandu, Gurung said.

Fatal mountain accidents are common in Nepal, whose eight peaks over 8,000 meters attract climbers from around the world. In 2023, such accidents killed 18 people, a record.
