Four young people from Lozère and Gard will leave for the Moroccan High Atlas, one year after the terrible earthquake which left 3,000 dead

A group of enthusiastic young people from the Occitanie region are preparing to undertake a trip to Morocco in October 2024 as part of an international solidarity project. This initiative, organized by the Ariège-based Tyefada association, aims to strengthen intercultural ties while providing valuable assistance to a local community.

Indeed, the damage from the October 2023 earthquake in the High Atlas is lasting over time, especially for the inhabitants of remote Berber villages. A year later, young French people would like to provide them with emotional support through laughter, which the clown association specializes in.

A Franco-Moroccan show

The project is therefore led by four young people from Lozère and Gard aged 16 and 17, Lounès, Louise, Vassili and Amaya. They were recruited by two members of Tyefada, Hugo and Wallis, who will accompany them during the trip. They will meet young people from the city of Tiznit.

The idea will then be to create a show together, mixing clown, theatre and circus, and to go and perform it in three small villages to the west of Marrakech. The group will also collect testimonies on site and set up cultural workshops accessible to all to create links.

Call for donations

They are supported by the Youth and Popular Education Cooperation Fund (Fonjep). They also organize several fundraising events, including sales of Moroccan pastries in supermarkets.

They are calling for donations via a kitty. These can be partly tax-deductible. Each donation will be rewarded with a small souvenir from Morocco.

Departure on October 20

The departure is scheduled for Sunday, October 20, with a return in early November. They will share their experience by participating in a series of documentary podcasts.

This project demonstrates the ability of young people to invest in a more united world. “We carry strong values, explains Amaya, a 17-year-old from Lozère. This project is not only a way to travel but above all to learn, share and help each other.“
